The Fittest Man on Earth

What were the odds that the gym I visited in Montreal would be owned by CrossFit Games champion Jeffrey Adler and his coach and fiancée, Caroline, and that both of them would be there that morning?

Sometimes the most memorable experiences begin as ordinary decisions. You choose a gym, walk through the door, and encounter two people who have reached the highest level of their sport.

Meeting Jeffrey and Caroline was especially meaningful because Fort Worth was preparing to host the 2024 CrossFit Games. I had the opportunity to welcome them to our city and to see, up close, the people behind the title “Fittest Man on Earth.”

Elite athletic performance attracts attention because of the visible result: the championship, record, or finish line. What audiences do not see as clearly is the repetition behind it. Excellence is built through thousands of ordinary sessions, careful coaching, recovery, adjustment, and the willingness to continue when progress is difficult to measure.

That principle extends beyond sport. Leadership, education, entrepreneurship, and public service all reward consistent effort. A dramatic achievement may appear to happen in one moment, but the foundation is usually created long before anyone is watching.

CrossFit also demonstrates the role of community. Individual athletes perform the work, yet coaches, training partners, and supporters help create the conditions in which improvement becomes possible.

Thank you to Jeffrey and Caroline for the unexpected welcome, and to CrossFit Westwood and EnduraLAB for making the connection.

The encounter was a reminder to remain open to the unplanned moment. We do not always know which ordinary choice will lead to a conversation, lesson, or experience we carry forward.
