Why Juneteenth Means So Much to Fort Worth

June 19 is especially meaningful to all of us in the City of Fort Worth, as we have become the Juneteenth capital of the world. We will soon be home to the National Juneteenth Museum, which will memorialize the significance of this day and how it closed a very dark chapter in our nation’s history.

Also, we are home to the legend, the icon, the grandmother of Juneteenth, Dr. Opal Lee. She was born and raised in Fort Worth and continues to (literally) lead the charge which made today a national holiday. We are so proud of her - 98 years young!
